FLOODS
For me,floods are the common hazards in Malaysia. It happend anytime andanywhere especially during rainy season. However some floods develop slowly, sometimes over a period of day.If flash floods,it can develop quickly, just few minutes and without any visible sign of rain.It always happend at Kuala Lumpur.
The common flood-related disease have been point in the article like infectious disease such as gastrointestinal disease, dermatits, conjuctivitis, leptospirosis and vector-borne disease such as dengue and malaria.
Other flood-related disease which not mention in the article such as Dysentry,Influenze and Chlorea.Dysentry is an inflammation of the bowels by bacteria such as Escherichia Coli causing a severe diarrhea.Other type of bacteria like Shigella and Ameba Entamoeba also causing a severe diarrhea.Diarrhea spread by germs from feaces entering the mouth. The germs can be spread by dirty enviroment like dirt utensil.Another flood-related disease is mold infection by fungi.Mold spore grow in a moist enviroment that contents organic matter.
Prevntion is the best way to curb the disease.Be aware of flood hazards no matter where you live, especially if you live ia a low-lying are near water or downstream from a dam.Routine sanitary procedures are essential dor disease prevention.Hands must be washed with soap after toilet use, after participating in flood clean up activities and after handling contaminated with flood water or sewage.Children not be allowed to play in flooded area.Water must be boiled before preparing or eating food. From Public Health must interventions to conduct assessment to determine the status of public health infrastructure,utilities(e.g. water, sewage and electricity) and health, medical and pharmaceutical needs.Must educate public regarding proper sanitation and good hygine.Organize delivery of health care services and suppliesand continuity of care.

ASSIGNMENT 1
How to curb gastrointestinal disease so that flood victim will not have to suffer from this disease? In my opinion, because gastrointestinal disease is acquired by ingesting contaminated food and water, the authority should supply them with clean packed cooked food, clean drinking water and clean water supply for cleaning purposes until the situation come to normal. Of course these actions will involved big sum of money, required more volunteers and effective management but I believed it is worth for the sake of those precious life.
I think it is also a great idea if flood victims can be educated regarding this infectious disease by giving them information via talks, handouts, radio and television programs and so on. With proper knowledge, come understanding and prevention because nobody wants to become sick.
Flood victims should be placed in many designated flood relief centre in order to prevent over populated if put in only one place, make it easy to control sanitation and to lessen human to human contact in order to avoid spreading this enteric infections.
To strengthen their immune systems, flood victims should be advised to take daily vitamin supplements beside their diets. Another idea is to give them supplementary injection of a vaccine to maintain resistance to gastrointestinal disease.

Republish my blog assignment.Sorry.
With the current trends of global warming due to “greenhouse gases” effect, changes in global climate resulted from rapid industrialization, we expected a wide range of negative health impact that will be affecting the health of many Malaysian and other people in many other countries. It is believed that, there will be potential depletion of resources such as water and food availability, loss of territory following sea-level rise, changes in the sanitary and hygiene situations of many populations, rise in vector and pest breeding areas, deterioration ambient air quality and increasing frequencies and intensities from extreme weather events from heat, natural hazards, flood and drought.
With such scenarios, without any appropriate mitigation measures and adaptability programs planned and implemented, we would expect higher incidence of mortality and morbidity from vector borne diseases such as from malaria and dengue, food and water borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, dysentery etc, infant and maternal mortality, morbidity and mortality from cardio-respiratory related diseases and suffering from natural disaster especially among the venerable groups of people such as infant, pregnant women, elderly and the sick people.
Any wound which breaks the surface of the skin, particularly puncture wounds or deep cuts, can result in tetanus (lockjaw).Any one receiving a wound where the skin is penetrated should consult a physician to assure that the wound is clean and not infected and that their tetanus immunization is current. Other diseases may appear as a result of flooding, notably infectious
hepatitis and possibly dysentery or diarrhea. There is no good immunization against these diseases. Excellent personal hygiene and the avoidance of eating or drinking contaminated foods are the prime preventive measures.
Drinking water contaminated by floodwater may carry microorganisms capable of producing diarrhea, dysentery, enteritis, infectious hepatitis, and other water-borne diseases. Listen to the news to find if your public water supply is contaminated. Public water supplies usually will not be contaminated and should be used whenever possible. However, all drinking water from wells which may have been contaminated by floodwater should be boiled at least two minutes.
For drinking: Boil all bulk (hauled-in) water for at least two minutes. Other liquids, such as pop and bottled water, that are sealed by the producer, may be used directly from the container.
For dishwashing: Dishes may be washed in clear, non-drinkable water if rinsed in hot, drinkable water. Otherwise, wash and rinse in hot, drinkable water.
For brushing teeth: Clean, non-boiled water may be safe, but it is best to use boiled water.
For other uses: Water out of the tap (if available) may be used for showering and toilet flushing.
If levels of nitrate in the water were not elevated before the flood, they will not be a problem as a result of flooding because of the extreme dilution factor. Chemicals and pesticides are not considered to be a problem in floodwaters due to the extreme dilution factor.
All canned foods, meats, and vegetables in direct or indirect contact with floodwater should be treated as follows:
1. Throw away food containers showing signs of leakage or
swelling.
2. Destroy the contents of corked bottles and screw-top glass
containers that have been covered by floodwaters.
3. All canned goods with a metal seal that have been covered
with floodwater should be carefully washed with soapy, hot
water. Sterilize the end of the washed can to be opened by
dipping it into boiling water for 30 seconds or wiping the
top with full-strength chlorine bleach. Be sure the can
opener is clean.
4. Destroy all root and garden vegetables or foods in cardboard
or similar containers in contact with floodwaters unless they
will be thoroughly cooked or are soaked in disinfecting
solutions before eating.
Failure of home refrigeration facilities for one day or more may lead to food spoilage.
When kept unrefrigerated for a long period of time, some foods are not safe and should be destroyed. Cooked foods, such as stews or leftovers stored in deep freezers should be used if thawed. Thawed foods should not be refrozen. If the freezer temperature has been 50 degree or higher for several hours, thawed foods may be used within a few hours. Such thawed meats should be cooked nicely before eating. When the floodwater has left the home, scrub all affected surfaces with soap and water, then rinse with a chlorine solution of one-half cup household chlorine laundry bleach to each gallon of water. Do not mix chlorine with ammonia or other cleansers containing ammonia. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the bathroom, handling contaminated articles or working in flood cleanup, and before preparing or eating food. Clean non-drinkable water may be used, but drinkable water is preferred.

My Late Blog Assigment
Floods are the most common natural disaster in both developed and developing countries and occasionally of devastating impact cause by high rainfall, tidal extremes and structural failure. A flood is a natural event that can have far reaching effects on people and the environment. Floodwater can seriously disrupt public represents a
Fecal-oral diseases are infections of the intestinal tract. Symptoms include fever, nausea, cramps, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea. Diarrhea can cause dehydration, which means the body lacks enough fluid to function properly. Acute diarrhea is usually related to a bacterial, viral, or parasitic infection. Chronic diarrhea is usually related to functional disorders such as irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease.
A vector-borne disease is one in which the pathogenic microorganism is transmitted from an infected individual to another individual by an arthropod or other agent, sometimes with other animals serving as intermediary hosts. Many important infections are transmitted by mosquitoes, which breed in, or close to, stagnant or slow-moving water. The transmission depends upon the attributes and requirements of at least three different living organisms: the pathologic agent, either a virus, protozoa, bacteria, or helminth.
The World Health Organization recognizes that the mental health consequences of floods have not been fully although it is generally accepted that natural disasters. The main evidence relates to common mental disorder, posttraumatic stress syndrome, and suicide. Posttraumatic stress disorder arises after a stressful event of an exceptionally threatening or catastrophic nature and is characterized by intrusive memories, avoidance of circumstances associated with the stressor, sleep disturbances, irritability and anger, lack of concentration and excessive vigilance.
The precaution need to be taken by the flood victim to reduce the possibility of illness, disease or injury. Never use contaminated water to wash dishes, brush your teeth, wash your hands, wash and prepare food, make ice or make baby formula. Always wash your hands with soap and safe water that has been boiled or disinfected before preparing or eating food, after toilet use, after participating in flood cleanup activities, and after handling articles contaminated with floodwater or sewage.
The contaminated area contains harmful bacteria and viruses and needs to be cleaned up as soon as possible. Appropriate clean up procedures includes use rubber gloves, boots and eye protection. Remove and discard contaminated household materials that cannot be cleaned or disinfected. .Clean and disinfect all contaminated areas with hot water and detergent. Then disinfect the contaminated area, cleaning mops, brooms and brushers with the bleach solution. Clean and dry dirty footwear and wash your clothes separately after clean up. Wash your hands and any affected parts of your body with soap and water.
Flood victim need to prevent food via direct contact or indirectly during interrupted power supply by throw away food that has an unusual odour, colour or texture and perishable foods including meat, poultry, fish, eggs or leftovers that have been left at above 5 degrees Celsius for more than 4 hours. Destroy all canned food if the can is open, bulging or damaged and containers with screw-caps, snap-lids, crimped caps, twist caps, flip top lids and home canned foods. Finally, the flood victim should do frequently medical check up to avoid any disease and illness.

Sometimes...the opportunity just came once.
Sometimes...it may change our life.
Sometimes...it doesn't change anything.
Sometimes...we can't decide what the right decision to be made.
Sometimes...we need help to make decision.
Sometimes...nobody can help us.
Sometimes...when we lose it, we'll regret.
Sometimes...when we grab it, we had a joy.

Obviously, when flooding occurs there is an increase risk of water-borne diseases going around due to the excess water from the floods. Moreover, the risk increases in relocation areas or areas where people are housed temporarily due to the fact that they were forced to abandon their homes because of the flood waters.
During floods, one of the most common flood-related disease is cholera. By relocating huge numbers of people and cramming them in small confined areas, sanitation would certainly become a problem. The water and food supplies would become contaminated and people would likely develop infection of the gut causing chronic diarrhea and vomiting, both symptoms of cholera. Significant improvements shows that people may died as a result of cholera. One of the major considerations during floods and mass displacement of people is where to get clean water supply. Because floods can easily contaminate drinking-water facilities, diseases like typhoid fever can easily become an outbreak.
A partner of cholera is dysentery which is caused by parasites also from contaminated food and water. Nausea, loose bowel movement, weight loss, and occasional fever are the general symptoms of dysentery. Each one is potentially dangerous in itself, thus combining the two is really deadly.
During floods, the risk of drowning, having injuries and trauma are higher. Be careful during wading on flood waters and also maneuvering ourself in flooded areas. Also, watch out for hypothermia. Long exposure to the cold floodwaters can easily lead to it. Children are more prone to hypothermia than adults. They are other diseases that can be spread through the air, by direct contact or through contaminated body fluids. Some examples of communicable diseases include, tuberculosis, measles, pertussis, meningitis, and hepatitis B. Tularemia is an acute bacterial disease transmitted to humans by hard ticks, biting flies, and direct contact with infected wild animals such as rabbits, hares, muskrats, beavers and also Blackleg, caused by micro-organisms spread over fields by standing water, is a potentially serious postflood disease.
Vector-borne diseases result from infections transmitted to humans and other animals by blood-feeding arthropods, such as mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas. The vector-borne pathogens, which include viruses, rickettsiae, bacteria, protozoa, and worm parasites, spend part of their life cycle in a cold-blooded arthropod vector and thus are influenced by environmental change.
The treatment of cholera and dysentery are through antibiotics but since drugs don’t work that fast because of the resilience of the disease. Therefore, in cases where flood victims are diagnosed with cholera and dysentery, immediate rehydration would be the best approach to save their lives. But of course, improving sanitation in the evacuation areas and making sure that the water and food supplies are clean are the best ways to avoid a epidemic to occur. One of the major considerations during floods and mass displacement of people is where to get clean water supply. Because floods can easily contaminate drinking-water facilities, disease like typhoid fever can easily become an outbreak.
I really agree with Sharil Nizam and others that the most common disease which easily spread out is by using infected water. As we know that we are using water everyday and the chances is very high to get the diseases.
