BLOG WRITING ASSIGMENTS

IN CASE OF FLOOD

A flood can devastate homes, commercial buildings, agricultural lands, public goods, and other physical properties. However, the most important things during the flood and after flooding there are also threats to one’s health and safety. diarrhea was found to be most common illness and a major cause of death amongst the population affected by the flood. Prevalent respiratory infection induced by the flood was also cause of death. Sanitation problems and various water-borne disease such as diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, gastroenteritis, typhoid and hepatitis A which are the most common flood-related diseases, especially among the poor and vulnerable, due to lack of access to safe drinking water, medicine and hygienic food. Vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue also common flood-related diseases.

Floodwaters contain disease causing bacteria, dirt, oil, human and animal wastes, and farm and industrial chemicals. They carry away whatever existing on the ground and upstream. Their contact with food items including foodcrops in agricultural lands during flooding can make that food unsafe to eat and hazardous to human health. Power failures caused by floods also damage stored (refrigerated and frozen) food.

Flooding also caused water sources contaminated with pollutants and devastates sanitary toilets. Direct and indirect contact with the contaminants whether through direct food intakes, vector insects such as flies, unclean hands, or dirty plates and utensils, result in waterborne illnesses and life-threatening infection diseases. The pollutants also saturate into the ground water and/or can infiltrate into sanitary sewer lines through the ground. In addition, wastewater treatment plants, if flooded and malfunctioned, can be overloaded with polluted runoff waters and sewage beyond their disposal capacity, resulting into backflows of raw sewage to homes and low lying grounds. Private wells can be also contaminated or damaged severely by floodwaters, while private sewage disposal systems also become a cause of infection and illnesses when they are broken or overflowed
In this manner, unclean drinking and washing water and sanitation, with lack of adequate sewage treatment, can lead to disease outbreaks, e.g. life-threatening cholera, typhoid, dysentery and hepatitis A or E

Prolonged rainfall and floods provide new breeding grounds (wet areas and stagnant pools) for mosquitoes and can lead to an increase in the number of vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue.

Other flood-related diseases which are not mentioned in the article including the diseases carry out by rats and rodents and dead animals. They are possibly carry viruses, bacteria and parasites that also caused illness or diseases. Leptospirosis, or Weil's disease is a zoonotic bacterial disease associated predominantly with rats. Malaysis’s worst flood disaster in nealy 40 years have killed 15 people, including two who died from Leptospirosis caused by exposure to water contaminated with the urine of rat and others animal. The symptom of leptospirosis include diarrhea, vomiting and kidney or liver problems.

Besides the flood related health problems described above, people are also at risk from skin infections caused of insects or bugs bites, especially in the wet over-crowded emergency shelters. Skin, eyes, nose and ear infections can also caused by direct contact to the flood water contaminated by bacteria, parasites or chemicals especially children who like to play in the dirty flood water.

The way to curb the water-born and vector-born disease is to
practices some basic precautions to prevent possible diseases during and after flooding and to maintain good health during the repercussion of floods. The most important thing is to make sure people access to safe drinking, washing and bathing water and hygienic foods. They should provided with safe drinking water, washing, bathing and sanitation facilities. Water supply should disinfected with enough chlorine to purify drinking water. Vector- born disease can be avoided by fogging of mosquito-proned areas and by using a net in a bed time.

LD50 correction

Assalamualaikum...

Hi everyone..actually I just want to inform about our 'amali report ' which is got some calculation error.Sorry , coz I'm using this blog to give the information.I think many of us use or search for this blog frequently so that it is easier for me to write something which is supposely not in the right place.
Ok..according to our amali report , there is a mistake in the calculation of the LD50 especially in the dose of 120 mg/kg.Please notice that it should be 9/12 x 100 ( before 9/13 x 100 ) so that we can get the % of Lethality about 75% instead of 69.2 %.I hope everybody can correct it so that we will get the same amount of the calculation in the report.
It almost about 2 month after our last meeting.I hope everyone already finished their assignment and start the long break next month ( Hari Wilayah n Chinese New Year ).ok..I think I should stop right now.C u in the next visit.

In Case Of Flood

IN CASE OF FLOOD

Natural disaster in Malaysia such as floods make an enormous impact on the environment and society. Floods are not only troublesome and life wrecking they are known to increase the transmission of water-borne disease and vector-borne disease. A flood is an overflow of an expanse of water that submerges land , a deluge. In the sense of “ flowing water ” the word is applied to the inflow of the tide , as opposed to the outflow or “ ebb ”. It is due to the mass of water within a body of water such as a river or lake , exceeding the total capacity of the body and as a result some of the water lows or sits outside of the normal perimeter of the body. It can also occur in rivers , when the strength of the river is so high it flows right out of the river channel, usually at corners or meanders. These of course are not applicable in such instances as sea flooding. Flood are the most frequent type of disaster worldwide. Thus , it is often difficult or impossible to obtain insurance policies which cover destruction of property due to flooding , since floods are a relatively predictable risk . A flood can cause by blocked sewage pipes and waterways , such as the Malaysia flood. Typical effects from flood :

1) Primary effects
- Physical damage – Structures such as buildings get damage due to flood water. Landslides can also take place.
- Casualties – People and livestock die due to drowning. It can also lead to epidemics and diseases.

2) Secondary effects
- Water supplies – contamination of water . Clean drinking water becomes scarce.
- Disease – Unhygienic conditions. Spread of water-borne .
- Crops and food supplies – Shortage of food crops can be caused due to loss of entire harvest.

3) Tertiary / long –term effects
- Economic – Economic hardship , due to e.g. temporary decline in tourism , rebuilding costs, food immediately effected by the risk of severe weather events.
- Psychological – Loss of loved ones etc.

Flooding has been shown to cause epidemics of water-borne and vector-borne disease . This is the most common flood – related disease. Water-borne diseases such as cholera , hepatitis A and typhoid . These diseases are caused by drinking contaminated water. There is also an increased risk of infection through direct contact with contaminated water ( not by drinking ) .These include wound infections , dermatitis , conjunctivitis , ear , nose and throat infections . malaria and dengue fever. Vector-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue . The vector here is the mosquito , which tends to breed during floods. During heavy rainfall , water accumulates in even more places . Stagnant water encourages mosquitoes to breed , especially when the flood water recede . Usually malaria epidemics occur around six to eight week after a flood. The risk of mosquito disease outbreaks is also enhanced because of human behavioural changes. If you are displaced and forced to sleep outside or in tents without mosquito nets or aerosols , the risk of getting bitten is a lot higher.

Other flood – related diseases which are not mentioned in the article is Leptospirosis . This disease that can be contracted through the skin or mucous membranes ( like the eye ) .Outbreaks are usually caused by exposure to water contaminated with the urine of infected animals such as rodents, cattle , pigs , and wild animals. Human become infected through urine-contaminated water, food, or soil either by drinking , eating , skin or mucous membrane contact. The health costs of inaction will be the incidence of injuries and death. Leptospirosis can be treated with antibiotics such as doxycycline and penicillin.

The only way to curb the water –borne and vector-borne disease is besides moving to a safe area , you should only drink boiled chlorinated water . Don’t drink water from rivers or wells after a flood. Make sure your food is prepare with the same water . Wash your hands if you touch contaminated water.

BLOG WRITING ASSIGNMENT

In Case Of Flood

During the northeast monsoon months of November and December, two main spells of heavy continuous monsoon rain causes floods in many areas in Peninsular Malaysia, such as Kelantan, Pahang, Terengganu, Kedah and the latest, Johor. The floods also results in cancellation of flights and train services for several days, hundreds of hectares of paddy fields ruined, houses swept away and damage. It also causes trauma and deep emotional disturbance to the flood victims.

There are a few diseases that are related to floods. The most common flood-related diseases are infectious diseases such as gastrointestinal infections, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, leptospirosis and vector-borne disease such as dengue and malaria.
Gastrointestinal infection is the inflammation of the stomach and intestine and usually due to acute infection by viruses or bacteria such as Salmonella typhi, Eshericheria coli and Vibrio cholerae. These diseases are caused by contamination of drinking water and foods. The symptoms of gastrointestinal infections are fever, diarrhea, vomiting and stomach ache. Conjunctivitis is the infection of the eye also known as red eye disease. The eye becomes red and swollen and produces a watery or pus-containing discharge. It is caused by infection of bacteria or viruses, allergy or physical or chemical irritation. Dermatitis is a disease which can cause irritation of the skin. Leptospirosis is a disease that can be contracted through the skin or mucous membranes (i.e. eyes), cause by the urine of rodents that contaminate the water.
All the diseases mentioned above are due to contaminated of flood waters with fecal material and toxics wastes from overflowing sewage systems, agricultural and industrial by-products.
The vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria are transmitted by mosquitoes. Dengue is a viral disease that occurs throughout the tropics and subtropics areas. It is transmitted to humans principally by the mosquito Aedes. Malaria is an infectious disease due to presence of parasitic protozoa of the genus plasmodium within the red blood cells. The disease is transmitted by Anopheles mosquito. The risk of mosquito disease outbreaks greatly increase during heavy rainfall whereby stagnant water encourages mosquito to breed, especially when the flood water recede.

Other common flood-related diseases which are not being mentioned in this article are ear, nose and throat infections, which cause by direct contact, not by drinking contaminated water and they can lead flu, cough and sore-throat. Disease outbreaks are also affected by overcrowding, the underlying health status of individuals and the availability of health care services

The best ways to curb the vector-borne disease such as dengue is to make sure to clean up all things when returning to flooded homes. Also clean up drains and areas with stagnant water. Destroy all the mosquito breeding areas. Always sleep under mosquito net and use aerosols to kill mosquitoes. Hospitals and health authorities are to be directed to check through all flood victims showing signs and early symptoms of these diseases such as fever, headache, severe pain in the joints and muscles and an irritating rash and get an early treatment for these cases.
